Yeast


 

The word "yeast" comes from the Sanskrit 'yas' meaning "to seethe or boil". It is a  member of the fungus family and is a single-celled fungi. There are two type of Yeast i.e Fresh Yeast and Dried Yeast. Fresh yeast is ivory colored with a yellowish hue and is soft and moist and should easily crumble, where as Deried Yeast are tiny, dehydrated, bead-shaped, sand colored. They are used like baking powder and baking soda. Yeast is also used to make breads, Danish pastries, brioche, croissants. It is rich source of protein and B vitamins. Yeast should be stored in the refrigerator away from moisture, heat and light.
